THE PURPLE DENTISTS
The Purple Dentists formed in Brunswick back in the 1980’s and went on to perform at the first two Brunswick Music Festivals in 1989 and 1990. They reformed in 2013 for an appearance at the 25th Anniversary Brunswick Music Festival, and since then they have been holding court at The Spotted Mallard in Brunswick, performing a number of legendary shows at this much-loved Sydney Rd venue.

The music of the Dentists is based on the Irish tradition but also incorporates elements of Zydeco, country swing, free improvisation and contemporary compositions. A mixture of old and new, displaying the classic diversity of genre that made the band’s name.

JIM GREEN
Jim Green is a Melbourne guitarist/singer who is inspired by the work of Richard Thompson, Ry Cooder and Andy Irvine. Jim has played music professionally in Switzerland, Ireland and has toured New Caledonia ten times in as many years. A new project featuring Melbourne roots virtuoso’s Sam Lemann and Andy Scott has led to a CD “Butter” which features several of Jim’s previously recorded songs.

Sam Lemann has developed his own tasty, swinging guitar style that is much in demand by singers, songwriters and bandleaders, and is inspired by guitarists like Charlie Christian, Barney Kessel, Chet Atkins, Doc Watson and Ry Cooder. Sam has been a regular visitor to Hawaii in recent years, studying with Slack-Key guitar guru Cyril Pahinui and many great Ukulele players. Sam co-leads The Irwell Street String Band with vocalist Hetty Kate.

Tamara Murphy, versatile bassist and composer, is known for her solid groove playing and lyrical soloing ability. An esteemed composer, Tamara was awarded the inaugural PBS Young Elder of Jazz Commission. Tamara performs regularly with many leading contemporary jazz and pop musicians in Australia.

Mairéad Hurley is from Ballymote, Co Sligo, and won the All Ireland Concertina Senior Championships at the Fleadh Cheoil na hEireann in 2006. Music runs in her blood as her father is a flute and tin whistle teacher and her four siblings all play music. She has been playing since she was four years old.

Mairéad moved to Australian in 2014, and is now based in Melbourne where she has become immersed in its vibrant music scene. Mairéad is an awesome player who will add a level of magic and excitement to this brilliant night of Celtic music.

Mairéad will open the show in a tune-fest the great Anthony O'Neill

The Purple Dentists, as the name might suggest, were something of a musician’s fantasy – a loosely defined coterie of pals and musical cronies who played anything and everything to enthusiastic punters. This happened in Brunswick during the 1980s at the Retreat hotel. At the time the Retreat was a marvellous Greek pub with no light, no ventilation and the clandestine air of a mob lair. We played there almost exclusively in a time when heavy clouds of cigarette smoke, even in the pub kitchen, were a mandatory adjunct to the music. The repertoire of the band was stylistically diverse, from jigs and reels to hungarian dances, original songs to country standards. It was based on seat-of-the-pants improvisation with a modicum of rehearsal. In truth, the playing sometimes scaled great heights and we all enjoyed walking our musical tightrope.
