Two of the world's hottest acoustic
guitar players, TONY McMANUS and BEPPE GAMBETTA,
are coming to The Spotted Mallard for the
2016 Louis McManus Memorial Concert, which is
being presented as a part of the 2016 Brunswick Music
Festival.
This concertbrings together a strong McManus family
connection with the appearance of Louis' cousin Tony
McManus and also celebrates the strong local connection
with members of the Rebels Without A Clue.
Scottish born and Canadian resident Tony
McManus is the world's undisputed greatest Celtic
guitar player whilst Italian Beppe Gambetta is
one of Europe's hottest flatpickers, with America in
his heart and his roots in the sun and olive trees of
the Mediterranean.
They combine in a virtuoso performance of world guitar
styles from both sides of the Atlantic, featuring traditional
and contemporary music and song, played with passion,
beautiful precision and astounding technique.
Rebels Without A Clue are led
by John McAuslan, vocals and guitar (ex Brunswick
Music Festival Director and in 2016 celebrating 40 years
in Australia and 70 years on this earth); Stephan
Brown, bass, vocals; Ken Maher, mandolin,
guitar, vocals; Tony Hargreaves, piano, accordion,
vocals; Michael Harris fiddle.
Louis's truly virtuoso playing influenced so many Melbourne
musicians over the years and it is a wonderful opportunity
to come together and celebrate the music and the friendship
that we all shared with Louis.
The Annual Louis McManus Memorial Concert has been
presented as a part of the Brunswick Music Festival
every year since 2005.

ROUND
TRIP
by Tony McManus and Beppe Gambetta
Released
TWO MASTER MUSICIANS CREATE STUNNING MUSIC
On Round Trip these two amazing musicians have combined
to create a series of stunning duets that not only demonstrate
their individual virtuosity, but their innate ability
to blend numerous musical traditions and styles producing
stunning new music.
"The masterly guitarists join forces on Round
Trip, which showcases their globetrotting tendencies
and virtuosic technique, not to mention their ability
to synthesize the music of different traditions and
eras into new sounds. The guitarists push each other
outside of their comfort zonesMcManus tackling
the Mediterranean repertoire and Gambetta the Celticto
excellent effect. Its breathtaking to witness
Gambetta and McMacnus trade wits on the traditional
Doherty/Return to Milltown/Tommy Peoples
and converge on striking harmonies in Moustambeiko,
the duos arrangement of a Greek number, with McManus
playing the bouzouki." scoousticguitar.com
Beppe Gambetta was born in Genoa, Italy in 1955.
An acoustic guitar flat picker and singer, Beppe has
been called a virtual United Nations of influences:
Italian, Ukrainian, Appalachian, Sardinian, Celtic.
Beppe is continually composing his personal mosaic of
sounds and flavours, from his unique background as an
Italian musician in love with both American roots music
as well as the music of his native country.
Tony McManus was born in Paisley, Scotland and
is now living in Canada. Tony has both extended and
transcended the parameters of contemporary Celtic music.
Ranked by peers and predecessors alike alongside the
guitar worlds all-time greats, (English guitarist
John Renbourn described him as the best Celtic
guitarist in the world.) his fiendishly dexterous,
dazzlingly original playing draws on traditions from
the entire Celtic diaspora Scotland, Ireland,
Brittany, Galicia, Asturias, Cape Breton, Quebec
along with
still further-ranging flavours, such as jazz and east
European music. Long applauded for his uncanny ability
to transpose the delicate, complex ornamentation characteristic
of traditional bagpipe or fiddle tunes even the
phrasing of a Gaelic song onto his own six strings,
McManus is increasingly being acknowledged also as a
pioneering figure in bridging the realms of Celtic music
and other guitar genres.
LOUIS McMANUS & THE REBELS WITHOUT A CLUE

Rebels Without A Clue are lead by John McAuslan,
vocals and guitar (ex BMF director and in 2016 celebrating
40 years in Australia and 70 years on this earth); Stephan
Brown, bass, vocals; Ken Maher, mandolin, guitar,
vocals; Tony Hargreaves, piano, accordion, vocals;
Michael Harris fiddle.
There is a strong connection with Louis McManus and the
members of the Rebels Without A Clue. One of Louis's many
musical collaborations was the twin fiddles of The
Leisure Twins with Michael Harris and later
Tony Hargreaves on piano. In the early eighties
Louis played many concerts with John McAuslan together
as part of Cooney's Brew, notably in support of
many Furey Brothers shows at Dallas Brookes and Hamer
Hall. And later in his life he fronted his own band The
Causeway Giants which held a residency at the famous
Retreat Hotel, this roots mash of Irish dance music/ reggae/
zydeco/ tex mex/ featured Ken Maher on fiddle,
and the late Simon Melia on accordion.
Louis's truly virtuoso playing influenced so many Melbourne
musicians over the years and it is a wonderful opportunity
to come together and celebrate the music and the friendship
that we all shared with Louis.
LOUIS McMANUS MEMORIAL CONCERT
____________________________________
2016 marks the 28th anniversary of the Brunswick Music
Festival, and over those 28 years, no-one has captured
'the heart and soul' of the Festival more than Louis McManus.
Louis lived in Brunswick for more than ten years and this
was his 'home-town' festival. It was fitting then, that
he played such a major role in the 1st Brunswick Music
Festival way back in 1989.
Louis' first appearance at the Brunswick Music Festival
Festival was on Saturday April 1, 1989, in the Guitar
Concert at the Brunswick Town Hall, alongside Martin Carthy,
Tommy and Phil Emmanuel, Steve Housden, Tony O'Neill and
Steve Groves.
The next day, Louis appeared in an afternoon concert with
the great Martin Carthy in the intimacy of the Brunswick
Mechanics Insititute. In fact, it was the Brunswick Music
Festival that brought Louis and Martin together in a hastily
arranged short-tour that resulted in a life-long friendship.
Later that night, Louis took the 1st Brunswick Music Festival
out in style with his mates in the Celtic spectacular
at the legendary Retreat Hotel. The Festival finished
with George Butrumlis, Martin Carthy, Dan Bourke, Tony
O'Neill, Dobe Newton, Steve Groves, Jan Wositzky and Phil
Emmanuel joining Louis on stage under the banner of The
Purple Dentists: a night that will live forever for those
lucky enough to be at the Retreat Hotel.
Louis would go on to play at the Brunswick Music Festival
with either the The Purple Dentists or the Leisure Twins
each and every year until illness forced him from the
stage.
The Annual Louis McManus Memorial Concert has been presented
as a part of the Brunswick Music Festival every year since
2005.
