WE are
delighted to welcome from Teeside in NE England the fabulous
Vin Garbutt: a legend of English folk music.
Vin's trademark blend of traditional reels, passionate
protest songs and zany patter has won him legions of fans
across the world. Powerful, hugely moving, warm, humane,
inspired, funny and gut wrenchingly honest. These are
just some of the superlatives used to describe a Vin Garbutt
performance.
Vins career has spanned over 40 years of constant
world wide touring which must make him some kind of elder
statesman of folk. His songs were inspired by the folk
tradition at the beginning of his career, and they still
are, but have transformed into gritty social comment and
life observations. He is renowned for his hilarious intros
but for him his song lyrics are the crux of his performance.
We will be opening
the night with a set from Brunswick's own Mandy Connell,
one of this city's finest singer-songwriters. Don't
miss this!
Vin Garbutt is for ever in demand, so get your tickets
early!..... all roads lead to The Spotted Mallard!

SYNTHETIC
HUES
Vin released his 16th album, 'Synthetic Hues'
in October 2014. It is an album of classic Vin Garbutt
songs plus some outstanding songs from other writers
that Vin has collected. Thirteen tracks altogether,
songs that you will recognize from Vin's live performances
and the odd surprise such as the famous Eric Bogle
song 'No Man's Land'. Vin is beautifully accompanied
by musicians Stewart Hardy on fiddle, multi instrumentalist
Becky Taylor, Dave O'Neill on mandolin and Kristen
Peacock on piano. Resulting in a full rich sound
evoking feelings from anger to tenderness.
VIN GARBUTT
Vin cuts through the bull, grasping those
he meets firmly by the hand and shaking them up with
a dose of laughter and tears. Its a true gift
to be able to make us laugh and squirm at the same time,
but Vin does both. He should be prescribed on the National
Health. English Folk Dance & Song Society.
Every budding singer-songwriter please take
note: attending a Vin Garbutt concert is now mandatory
before your first public performance. Garbutt is the
undisputed master of communicating with an audience.
Penguin Eggs magazine. Canada
Vin Garbutt was born in South Bank, Middlesbrough,
to an Irish mother and an English father. He discovered
Folk Music whilst he was still at school, becoming a
regular visitor (and performer) at The Rifle Club in
Cannon Street, Middlesbrough. On leaving school Vin
was steered into the safety of an apprenticeship at
the massive I.C.I. Wilton Chemical Plant.
In 1972 he recorded his first album for Bill Leader
- The Valley Of Tees. This firmly established him as
a singer and songwriter of fine socially conscious,
and environmentally aware songs. As one magazine very
recently put it - "Vin Garbutt was green long before
the Greens were green!"
Throughout the 70's Vin's reputation grew rapidly until
he became "the most sought after performer on the
Folk Scene". The development of his 'Act' took
in songs of the past and his own material, his introductions
became more and more zany and funny, and his brilliant
tin-whistle playing never ceased to amaze. "Half
the fun on some of his numbers is spotting the story
he has told you in the song he is singing" - to
quote one review.
Vins first tour of Australia was in 1977 and he
has more or less toured here biannually ever since.

MANDY CONNELL
We will be opening the night with a set from Brunswick's
own Mandy Connell, one of this city's finest
singer-songwriters.
Mandy is bare-souled & luminous on stage. With acclaim
throughout the folk scene Mandy is admired for her striking
story songs and her commanding stage presence, taking
the Declan Affley Award (National Folk Festival)
in 2005 and the Maldon Minstrel Award (Maldon
Festival) in 2006. She has toured the UK, formed Trad
5 piece Stray Hens, and continues
to write original music.
Selling out of her album Tall Tales & Pretty
Colours, Mandy has collected a steady following
with endorsements from Paul Brady, Weddings Parties
Anything, and from well known songwriters Judy Small
and Eric Bogle.
Mandy has a talent for interpreting the moment. She
is known for a rich voice, able to convey passion with
a tortured restraint that is singularly arresting- completely
identifiable as her own.
Saw Ms Mandy Connell sing and play at Australias
National Folk Festival. A great talent with a passionate
and compelling voice and a total command of her music!
Catch her if you can... Paul Brady
Mandy Connell is the latest in a long and distinguished
line of talented female musicians to grace the musical
scene in Australia. A fine singer and songwriter in
her own right, she also has the knack of taking other
peoples songs, and by virtue of her original and
unique interpretations making them her own, the mark
of a truly gifted performer Eric Bogle
